Obituary for William Marion Shafer

William Marion Shafer, age 87, of Bedford, Texas, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2026, in Grapevine. Born on November 20, 1938, in Denton County, William lived a life marked by dedication to family, community, and country.

A proud graduate of Grapevine High School, class of 1957, William was known for his love of football, dominoes, and cards. His athletic spirit and camaraderie on the field were matched by his warmth and good humor at the game table.

William honorably served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany, before returning home to Grapevine. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to Parker Furniture, where he became part-owner, and later to found Shafer Construction, serving the Grapevine area for several years as a respected contractor. William also contributed his talents as a Senior Salesman in the electronics department at Montgomery Wards and as a facility technician for the City of Euless until his retirement.

Deeply committed to his community, William was sworn in as a member of the Grapevine City Council in 1978, serving with integrity and dedication. He was also a proud 50-year member of the Grapevine Masonic Lodge #288, reflecting his lifelong commitment to fellowship and service.

William’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Donna Mayfield; his son, Brian Shafer; his daughter, Jennifer Shafer, and her spouse, John Robertson; his stepchildren, Ralph E. and Angel Mayfield, Jeffery S. Mayfield, Nathan and Amanda Mayfield, Deanna and Phillip Parker; his sister, D. Ann Pearson; his grandchildren, Stella Robertson, Roderick D. Mayfield, Stormie and Johnathan Prewitt, Norman R. Prewitt, James W. Prewitt, Monica and Michael Cheves, Miranda N. Mayfield, Amy R. Gonzales, Michael T. Mayfield, Alyssa, Ryan Vaughan, and Connor and Cadence Mayfield; his great grandchildren, Maddox, Kinsley, and Jeremiah Cheves, Melanie and John Poole, Elizabeth M. Poole, Emery N. Atreus, Nathan W. Mayfield, Gabriel and Mateo Gonzales, Benson R. Vaughan, Jackson R. Vaughan, and Wrenliegh R. Vaughan; he is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C.B. Martin and Daisy Allene Harris Shafer; sisters Wanda Pulliam, Donnie Jo Vest, Shirley Glass, and Becky Shafer; and brothers Ardean Shafer, Bobby Shafer, and Ronnie Shafer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Lucas Funeral Home Chapel, with Mark Lucas Kelly officiating.

William will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
