Roberta Sue Perry Chaney, 88, of Keller, Texas, passed away on January 28, 2026, after complications from pneumonia. Her transition to Heaven was peaceful, with her family surrounding her in her final moments.
She was born on April 21, 1937, in Petersburg, Texas, to Robert L. and Bertha E. Perry. Known as “Birdie” to friends and family, she grew up in a loving home as one of seven siblings. At the age of 19, Birdie was introduced to Leonard Francis Chaney through a mutual friend—her future sister-in-law, Rose Chaney. Leonard and Birdie were married on her birthday, April 21, 1956, in Lubbock, Texas, where they soon began their life and family together.
After relocating to Euless, Texas, in 1963, Birdie and Leonard raised their children—Debra Sue, Leonard Dale, and Robert Edward—in a Christ-filled home rooted in faith and family. Birdie lost Leonard unexpectedly on March 23, 1988, and never remarried. Her life continued to be richly filled by the immense love of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many dear friends and extended family.
Birdie was talented in embroidery and crocheting, creating many cherished handmade gifts that her family will treasure forever. Known as “Nanny” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she deeply cherished time spent with them. Whether celebrating birthdays and holidays, welcoming visits at her home, taking her great-grandchildren trick-or-treating, hosting Easter egg hunts, or visiting the turtles in the courtyard at Truewood, any time spent with her grandchildren brought her great joy.
She loved playing cards and bingo, tending to her rose bushes, enjoying outings with her women’s group at First Baptist Church of Keller, and simply spending time with those she loved. Her love and devotion to God never wavered, regardless of life’s challenges, and her steadfast faith guided her even through her final days.
Birdie is survived by her sisters, Anita Ward and Dorothy Cagle; her three children, Debra Prater and husband John, Dale Chaney and wife Tracy, and Eddie Chaney and fiancée Connie Bartee; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, Tiffany Prater and son Jaxton, Matthew Prater, wife Kamille and daughter Ava, Marissa Chaney, Madison Valentine, husband Miles and daughters Emerson, Presley and Kennedy, Jeff Chaney and son Matthew, Stephany Whitely, husband James and daughters Harley and Jurney, Elizabeth Chaney, fiancé Nick Strebeck and daughters Bethany, Kathryn and Penelope, Lance Bartee and wife Hazel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bertha Perry; her beloved husband, Leonard Chaney; her siblings, Melvin Perry, Josey Oehrlien, Robert Commodore “R.C.” Perry, and Troy Perry; granddaughter Jessica Janek; and great-grandson Ryatt McCaffrey.
A celebration of Birdie’s life and her reunion with our Savior in Heaven will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Keller. Visitation will be held the evening prior, Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Keller, Texas.
