Richard "Rick" Hornbuckle, a man whose life journey was as rich and expansive as the open roads he traveled, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, in North Richland Hills, Texas, succumbing to MSA and Cerebellar Ataxia. Born on July 28, 1947, in Yakima, Washington, Rick embraced life with a spirit as enduring as his beloved Cherokee heritage—an identity he carried with deep pride.
For three decades, Rick dedicated himself to his career with United Parcel Service and with the Western Conference of Teamsters, Local 533, in Reno, Nevada, achieving a milestone that few can claim: over three million miles driven without a single accident. Behind the wheel, he was more than a driver; he was a steward of safety and reliability—a reflection of the integrity that defined him.
But Rick’s life extended beyond his professional accomplishments. He was an aficionado of music, inspired by the timeless sounds of The Eagles and other musicians that fueled his joy of dance and filled many family gatherings with laughter and harmony. His passion for play was evident in his love for washer toss games, a simple pleasure he shared with friends and family alike. He was always quick with a story or a joke, and blessed those around him with his generous heart.
He conquered challenges that faced him with strength and grace through the loving support of God and his family. Especially the great accomplishment of 35 years of sobriety, with many of those years supporting others to achieve the same.
Rick's spirit of adventure was matched by his devotion to family. He reveled in the great outdoors—camping beneath star-studded skies, boating across serene waters, and mastering the thrill of water skiing. Among his most cherished memories was helping his son Greg restore a Mustang fastback, a testament to the hands-on love and guidance he bestowed upon his children. His love for muscle cars inspired him to pursue the restoration of a Ford Ranchero, which he later modified for drag racing in the super stock division, earning a sponsor or two along the way.
Converting to the Catholic Church later in life, Rick’s journey was strengthened by pilgrimaging to the Holy Land, walking where Jesus walked, seeing where the Apostles gave witness, and confirming his new found faith.
After his beloved wife, Lorna, retired, the couple embarked on a new chapter, selling their house and taking their RV, with a double stacker car trailer, to travel the breadth of the country. These journeys were more than trips—they were adventures shared with loved ones, driven by Rick’s zest for exploration and his joy in the company of family.
Rick was a beacon of kindness and warmth, a man who welcomed all with a smile that immediately put others at ease. His great sense of humor brightened rooms and lightened hearts, while his flair as a host turned family parties into unforgettable celebrations of life and love. Rick’s laughter, generosity, and spirit of camaraderie will forever echo in the lives he touched.
He is survived by his cherished wife Lorna Hornbuckle; sons Mike, Kevin, Allen (spouse – Callie), and Gregory Hornbuckle; grandchildren Sarah Grant, Alec Hornbuckle, Charles Hornbuckle, Rose Hornbuckle, Tessa Hornbuckle, Joseph Hornbuckle, and Anthony Hornbuckle; and five beloved great-grandchildren. Rick also leaves behind his sister Barbara Milne and brother James Hornbuckle. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Zora Juanita Powell and Jim R. Hornbuckle, and sisters Evelyn McPherson and Patricia Gottfried.
Services to honor Rick’s remarkable life will begin with a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 719 University Place, Lewisville, TX 75067. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. The day will close with a burial at 2:30 p.m. at Bear Creek Cemetery, 100 Bear Creek Cemetery Road, Euless, TX 76039.
Rick Hornbuckle’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, boundless love, and enduring spirit. He has left an indelible imprint upon the hearts of his family and friends—a compass guiding them onward, as steadfast as the countless miles he once confidently traveled.
