Ellen Miller

Mary Ellen Miller, age 98, passed from this life to her heavenly home on Monday April 13, 2026, at 5:30pm. Mary Ellen was born on November 28, 1927, at Van Alstyne, Texas. Her parents were Floyd E. Barton Sr. and Ola Perkins Barton of Van Alstyne, Texas.

She was a Christian and worshiped at different Baptist churches over her life. At present she is a member of Cross Church, North Richland Hills, TX. She loved reading her Bible and being at worship and serving.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, a family visitation will be held at 10:00 am at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line, Hurst, TX 76053 followed by a graveside service at 2:00 pm at Van Alstyne Cemetery, 460 S. Sherman St., Van Alstyne, TX 75495.

In her younger years, Mary Ellen worked hard alongside her family, helping to bale hay and pick cotton. She learned to create beautiful embroidery and loved crocheting.

She graduated from Van Alstyne High School.

In 1947 she married Weldon Glenn Avery and they had 3 daughters. She was a homemaker. The family lived in Springfield, Missouri; Liberal, Kansas; the Van Alstyne area, then for several years in Fort Worth. Around 1963 they moved to Waco, Texas and lived there for several years. Their marriage ended in 1965.

Mary Ellen moved back to Fort Worth, and she decided to go by her middle name, Ellen. She worked at the Woolworth counter service in downtown Fort Worth. Over the years she worked at other food service establishments, and in the kitchen of a hospital. She worked as a caregiver for a number of families and disabled adults. She was a hard worker.

Ellen enjoyed playing games and building puzzles. She was a fierce competitor at 42. She made several road trips, including a bus sightseeing trips with her sister, Roberta.

On March 6, 1970, Ellen married Bill R. Miller who then passed away on May 3, 1970.

In 1992 she moved to Austin, Texas. She lived in the South Austin area for 25 years. She was a member of the South Austin Baptist Church. She developed many sweet friendships at the church. She went on a mission trip to Mexico as well as serving in the church’s bus ministry, driving the church bus to homes in the neighborhood providing transportation to and from church for families and children.

In 2017 she moved to North Richland Hills, TX, to be closer to family. She began attending North Richland Hills Baptist. She made many new friends during this time.

She loved spending time with friends and family. Ellen had a great smile and laugh as well as a joyful spirit.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Floyd Barton, Jr; her sister, Roberta Brinkley; and her grandson, Christopher Honeycutt.

She is survived by her three daughters, Glenda Menn of Kerrville, TX; Mary Ann Wells of North Richland Hills, TX; and Betty Ruth Carter of San Antonio, TX. Grandchildren: Melissa Frazier of Sinton, TX; Kevin Miller of Hurst, TX; Dan Avery Carter of San Antonio, TX; Elyce Carter of San Antonio, TX. Great Grandchildren: Savannah Bratcher, Anthony Jimenez, Joshua Frazier, Christian Honeycutt, Max Honeycutt, William Miller, Skyler Carter, Weston Miller. Great-great grandsons: Kaiden Gandy & Jonathan Frazier.

The family thanks her many friends for loving and praying for her.
