Lucila "Lucy" Hernandez Mena passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, surrounded by family, friends, light, and love as she made her transition. Lucy was deeply cherished by all who knew her.
Above all, Lucy treasured her marriage to her beloved husband Jorge and delighted in her sons Jorge III and Victor, her daughters-in-law Sherry and Danielle, and the lights of her life—her grandchildren Gabriel, Amelya, Michael, and Aureliana.
Lucy cultivated lasting friendships with her neighbors, particularly Lisa and her cherished group of ladies who gathered for their weekly "Wicked Wednesdays" and "Thirsty Thursdays." These gatherings were filled with shared laughter, friendship, and the occasional drink or two.
A woman of many passions, Lucy possessed an exceptional green thumb, filling her home with flourishing plants that added warmth and welcome to all who entered. She was an enthusiastic collector of Betty Boop and Wizard of Oz memorabilia, which were proudly displayed throughout her home, along with her treasured collection of charm bracelets. Lucy was also a formidable card player who dominated poker games with skill and good humor—if Lucy was being dealt a hand, you had to accept that you'd likely finish second or worse by night's end.
Lucy transformed her home into a magical wonderland during the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, creating celebrations where everyone felt welcome. Her grandchildren particularly loved participating in these holiday traditions, inspired by their grandmother's infectious enthusiasm. For many years, Lucy and Jorge hosted their legendary annual Christmas tamale party. Word of Lucy's exceptional tamale-making skills drew many eager guests, but Lucy had one steadfast rule: "If you wanna take, you gotta make." Every year, newcomers would be lovingly initiated into the art of spreading masa on corn husks, only to be gently scolded that they hadn't used enough masa. These moments of instruction, delivered with love and laughter, blessed the tamales and created lasting memories. Lucy's tradition of burning the chicken wings during the tamale party became a beloved running joke—a tradition that someone else will now carry forward, knowing Lucy would approve.
Lucy was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan who loved her oldies music, with Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" serving as her personal anthem. Her sudden departure leaves a profound void in the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
Lucila was born on October 30, 1953, to Julieta and Francisco Hernandez. She is survived by her loving husband Jorge Jr.; her sons Jorge N. III (Sherry) and Victor (Danielle); her adored grandchildren Gabriel, Amelya, Michael, and Aureliana; her siblings Elias, Isela, Sally, Delia,Velia, Frank, Corrine, and Victor; her in-laws Maria, Alex, Veronica, Barbara, Peter, and Theresa; and countless cousins, nephews, nieces, and dear friends.
