Joy Marie Smith

Joy Marie Smith, of Roanoke, Texas, passed away on September 15, 2026, at the age of 87. She was born on October 30, 1938, in Walnut Springs, Texas. Joy will be remembered as a kind and welcoming woman whose home, hands, and heart reflected a life devoted to caring for others.

A homemaker in every beautiful sense of the word, Joy was truly a “Homemaker Deluxe.” She was famous for her cornbread and for being able to make a meal out of nothing, turning simple ingredients into comfort and hospitality. There was never a stranger around her table. She found joy in working with her hands and expressing her creativity in many ways. She collected all things “chickens,” and her talents as a seamstress, jewelry maker, painter, and crafter brought beauty and warmth to the lives around her. She also loved doing people’s hair, another reflection of her generous spirit and her delight in making others feel cared for.

Above all, Joy treasured her family. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and the love she had for them was one of the clearest expressions of who she was. She leaves behind her daughter, Luanne Dean (spouse – Buford), and her son, Spencer Smith (spouse – Kelli). She is also lovingly remembered by her granddaughter, Katie Vincent (spouse – Chandler), and her grandson, Garrett Smith. Their lives carry forward the warmth, creativity, and love that Joy gave so freely.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Gordon; mother, Grace Worlow Free; her father, Frank Free; her sister, Patricia Sedden; and her brother, Harrell Free. Their memories remained part of her story throughout her life.

Joy Marie Smith will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her kindness, her resourcefulness, her creative gifts, and the steady love she gave to her family and friends.
