Joey Neel Melton, a devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandfather, veteran, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at the age of 54, in Fort Worth, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones. His life, lived with quiet strength, deep love, and unyielding commitment, leaves a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
Born on November 12, 1970, in Camilla, Georgia, Joey had a unique blend of strength and humor. With a sharp wit and a sarcastic sense of humor, he could make anyone laugh—even when his jokes left everyone shaking their heads with smiles. While he wasn’t one for small talk or superficial connections, if Joey let you in, you knew you mattered. His words were few but always meaningful, and he never missed an opportunity to share his humor with those closest to him. Joey’s beloved brother, Christopher Melton, was someone whom he loved beyond measure. Joey and Chris shared a close relationship growing up—one built on trust, loyalty, and brotherhood that carried into adulthood and never wavered.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Joey served as a Combat Engineer with the 560th Engineers in the National Guard and later in Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Armored Division. His service to his country shaped his strength, discipline, and commitment to protecting those he loved. Joey was honorably discharged in December 1996.
Joey shared a once-in-a-lifetime love story with his wife, Hiedi Melton. Their journey began in March 1986, when they were teenagers. Through breakups and growing pains, they always found their way back to each other. On July 3, 1993, they married and built a life together that was rooted in commitment, resilience, and unconditional love. Together, they created a family and a legacy that will endure for generations.
Joey was the proud father of Tylor Melton (Evan) and their daughters Chloe and Millie; Brock Melton (Shaleigh) and their son Colton; Linzee Melton and her daughter Karsyn; Noah Melton; Kaitlyn Melton; and Zoey Melton – with the addition of Zachary Bobo (Sarah) and their children Gabriella, Gabriel, and Gracelynn. He is survived by his children, as well as his father, Harry Melton, and his beloved brother, Christopher Melton - as well as his mother-in-law, Mimi Brock, nieces and nephews India (Alex) Hamilton, Christain (Michael) Kaiden, Graham, Carter, and Brayden.
Above all, Joey was the proudest of his role as “Pops.” His grandchildren brought him joy unlike any other. Whether it was holding them in his arms, sneaking them treats, or simply sitting with them, Joey’s love for his grandchildren was pure, gentle, and unwavering. He was the kind of Pops every grandchild deserves—steady, funny, safe, and surrounded by love that needed no explanation.
Joey was also an avid softball player, remembered by teammates for his incredible skill and spirit on the field. His dedication to the game was just one example of how he approached everything in life—with passion and heart. He was equally passionate about his beloved Georgia Bulldogs, and whether they won or lost, his loyalty to his team was unwavering. His signature Georgia hats were a staple of his wardrobe, proudly worn to show his spirit.
Joey’s career as an aircraft mechanic for Lockheed Martin Aerospace in Fort Worth gave him a sense of purpose and pride. He worked on the F-35 Fighter Jet, and his deep sense of duty grew even stronger when his children followed in his footsteps.
Joey held strong in his faith. Even in the face of uncertainty, even when the weight of what he was going through brought questions, he never let go of what he believed. He was human, and he wrestled with it like anyone would—but his heart remained anchored in faith. That strength, quiet and unwavering, carried him through to the very end.
Joey was preceded in death by his mother, Francine Melton, and his father-in-law, Clifton Brock. Joey was also the father of Nicholas Melton, who passed away before taking his first breath, yet whose presence is forever held in the hearts of his family.
Joey’s love was quiet but fierce. He loved with his whole heart—whether as a father, a husband, a friend, or a Pops. His presence in the world may have been understated, but his impact was undeniable. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of calling him their own, but his love and lessons will echo in their hearts for a lifetime.
In keeping with his wishes, Joey will be cremated and remain at home, surrounded by the family he lived for.
In honor of Joey’s life and legacy, our family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made toward the creation of a foundation in his name. This foundation will be dedicated to helping others access natural and alternative treatments when facing a cancer diagnosis, especially those who choose a path outside of traditional standard-of-care. The donation link to the foundation can be found here.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. CST at Lucas Funeral & Cremations, 1601 S. Main St., Keller, TX 76248. A second celebration will be held in Pelham, Georgia, at a future date for extended family and lifelong friends to also honor his life.
