Joe Elms

April 13, 1946 — March 9, 2026

Joe Robert Elms, age 79, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, surrounded by those he loved.

Born April 13, 1946, to Pollyanna and Raymond Elms, Joe was a native of Fort Worth, Texas and an always proud member of the Carter Riverside High School Class of 1964.

Joe married Deborah Underwood on April 24, 1970, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 55 years. Together they built a life grounded in faith, love, and family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah Elms of Keller, Texas; his children, Melissa Elms (Robin) of Traverse City, Michigan; Robin Plata (John) of Rancho Mirage, California; and Jason Elms (Shannon) of Colleyville, Texas. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Allie and Jacob (Michaela) Plata and Carly and Jude Elms. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Fox Shortnacy of Abilene, Texas.

Joe believed deeply in hard work, loyalty, and integrity—values that shaped both his life and the way he cared for others. He built a respected career as a government relations officer in the credit life insurance industry with World Service Life, Integrity Life, and Resource Life, primarily in Texas with a brief time spent with American Modern Life in Cincinnati, Ohio. While he took pride in his work and the relationships he built, his greatest joy was always his family.

Joe was a steady presence—thoughtful, wise, and deeply caring. A man of strong faith, he completed Stephen Ministry training and offered comfort to many through compassionate listening and quiet encouragement during difficult times.

He also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: a good conversation, time with family and friends, an occasional bourbon, and his long-held appreciation for firearms and their craftsmanship.

Above all, Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud “Gee Boy,” and a loyal friend. He had a calm strength about him and a way of listening that made people feel truly heard and valued.

Joe’s life was defined not just by what he accomplished, but by the love he gave and the lives he quietly supported along the way. His family will carry forward his legacy of faith, strength, and steadfast love.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
