Joan Green

Joan Bell Green was born on July 4, 1941, in Longview, Texas, to Mary Hughes Bell and A. C. Bell. Born on a day set aside to celebrate freedom and independence, Joan lived a life defined by devotion to family, enduring love, and the relationships she treasured throughout her lifetime.

Joan spent her formative years in Kingsville, Texas, where she attended public schools. She later continued her education at Bee County College, an accomplishment that reflected the importance she placed on learning and personal growth.

In 1961, Joan married the love of her life, Luther Jonathan Green. Their marriage became the foundation of a family and a partnership that endured for more than four decades. Joan and Luther remained faithfully devoted to one another until his death in 2002. Together, they raised two children, Michele Green, and Luther Jonathan Green II, affectionately known as John John. Their home, their family, and the life they built together remained among Joan's greatest treasures.

Joan knew the joys of being a wife and mother, but in time she was also blessed with the special gift of becoming a grandmother. Her family grew across generations, and with that growth came new names, new stories, and new lives connected to the legacy she and Luther began so many years ago.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Luther Jonathan Green; her parents, Mary and A. C. Bell; an infant daughter, Cheryl Green; her sister, Dessy Rea Templeton Woods; her brother, J. C. Bell; and a host of aunts, uncles, relatives, and loved ones who completed their earthly journeys before her.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Michele Green and husband Michael Briggs of Justin, Texas; her son, Luther Jonathan Green II (John John) of Chippensburg, Pennsylvania; and her beloved grandchildren, Jonathan Tyler Green, Zoe Handy, and Skye Rojas.

Joan is also survived by her brother, Leo Bell of Beltsville, Maryland, and a large and loving extended family. Those who will cherish and carry forward her memory include her nephews, Dr. Nathan Templeton and his wife, Danielle (Nacogdoches, Texas); Michael Templeton and his wife, Cheryl (Houston, Texas); Leo D. Bell, Perry Starling, and niece Renea Sandford (Beltsville, Maryland), as well as a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other extended family members, and dear friends.

The passing of Joan closes a chapter in the Green and Bell families, but it does not end her story. Her story continues in her children and grandchildren, in the nieces and nephews who loved her, in family memories shared across generations, and in the countless moments that will forever bring her name to mind.

For more than forty years, Joan walked through life beside Luther. It is therefore fitting that, in death, she will return to his side. Joan will be laid to rest with her beloved husband at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas, where Luther was interred following his death in 2002.

Those who knew Joan will remember not simply the years between her birth and her passing, but the family she loved, the marriage she honored, the generations she helped shape, and the place she held in the lives of those fortunate enough to call her mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

A life that began on July 4, 1941, now becomes part of the enduring history of a family she loved so dearly. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, Joan Bell Green's memory will remain wherever her family gathers, wherever her stories are told, and wherever those she loved carry forward the legacy of the life she shared with them.

Rest peacefully, Aunt Joan. Your journey here is complete, your place in our family is everlasting, and you are home again with Luther.
