Janice Loree Frederick Barnes
(September 22, 1941 - August 24, 2025)
Janice Loree Frederick Barnes passed away peacefully in the arms of her family on August 24, 2025 in Haslet Texas at the age of 83 - just one month shy of her 84th birthday.
Born in Hugo, OK on September 22, 1941, she was the daughter of Douglas H Frederick and Frankie Day McDonel.
Janice was a proud salutatorian graduate of Maysville High School in 1959 and went on to pursue her Bachelor of Education from East Central University in Ada OK. She then earned her Masters in Education degree from the University of Oklahoma and later completed her Librarian Certification from the University of North Texas.
On December 22, 1971, Janice married the love of her life William “Bill” Walter Barnes, with whom she shared 54 years of love and partnership.
At the beginning of her career she joined the Department of Defense and taught for 2 years on Hahn Air Force Base in Germany. She then went on to have a fulfilling 34 year career as an elementary school teacher and librarian, with 25 of those years in the H-E-B School District.
After retirement she became a vibrant member of the community, Janice was proud of her volunteer work at Texas Health Alliance where she was presented with the Volunteer of the Year award in 2012. Janice was also an active advocate for teachers and education through her work with local and state retired teachers organizations. She had a love of travel and visited many countries around the world. Friends and family will remember her kind soul and spry sense of humor.
Janice is survived by her loving husband Bill Barnes; her daughter, Kelli Blackwelder and husband Billy, and her grandsons whom she thought the world of Trevor and Rhett Marshall. She has a brother-in -law George Church, niece and nephew Terri and David Sandridge, cousins Cleatus McDonel, Ann Thompson, and Pat Clark, and three great nieces, Lesley, Mycah and Carly that she loved dearly as well as countless friends, students and former co-workers.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas and Frankie Frederick; sister, Lillian Church; brother in law and sister in law, Palmer and Ann Willis, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be September 2nd at Lucas Funeral Home (1321 Precinct Line Rd, Hurst TX 76053) from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM . A Celebration of life will be held on September 3rd at Lucas Funeral Home at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park (3100 White Settlement Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76107).
