Gladys Lujean Starr Benedict was born on April 30, 1931, in the heart of Grapevine, Texas, at the corner of Main and Wall Street—a fitting beginning for a woman whose life would become woven into the very fabric of the town she loved. On April 24, 2026, just days before her 95th birthday, Lujean went home to be with her Lord and the loved ones who awaited her in Heaven.
Lujean spent nearly all her years in Grapevine, a place she cherished not just as her hometown but as part of her identity. She attended school in both Grapevine and Carroll Hill—now known as Southlake—and as a teenager worked at the Grapevine Palace and City Drug. Even in her youth, she carried a spirit of service, joy, and devotion. She loved to sing, to worship, and to spend her life doing good for others. Her faith was steady, her kindness constant, and her generosity a quiet force that shaped countless lives.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Guy Scott James Benedict; her father, John Proctor Starr; her mother, Lily May Staples Starr; and six siblings: John Proctor Starr (Dinah), Mary Ruth Tate (Erman), Emma Elizabeth Ezell (Chess), Bart Starr (Ann), Robbie Handcock (Jim), and Bert Allison Starr (Elanor).
Lujean’s greatest pride was her family, who carry forward the legacy of love, resilience, and faith she instilled in them. She is survived by her daughters: Julean Benedict, Tracie Brooks (Steve), and Tammy Swengle (Craig). She leaves behind grandchildren who adored her—Jared Swengle (Tristen), Nicole Stafford (Dyllon), James Brooks (Elizabeth), Brandon Brooks (Stacy), and Ethan Brooks—as well as her treasured great‑grandchildren: Casche Brooks, Stella Brooks, Harris Brooks, Shepherd Brooks, Libby Brooks, Scottie Swengle, Della Stafford, and Evelynn Stafford.
Lujean’s roots in Grapevine ran deep. She loved its history, its people, and the generations of family who helped build the community she held so dear. Grapevine was part of her, and she was part of it. Her children remain profoundly grateful and forever proud to call her their mother—a woman whose life was defined by faith, service, and an unwavering devotion to the people she loved.
Her legacy lives on in every life she touched, every kindness she offered, and every story that will be told about the remarkable woman who began her journey on a small corner in Grapevine and left the world immeasurably better than she found it.
