Geraldine “Gerry” Sears Owen 1936 – 2025
Geraldine “Gerry” Sears Owen, 89, of Hurst, Texas, was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on April 16, 2025. Born January 15, 1936, in Whitt, Texas, she was the daughter of Gertrude and Vernon Sears.
Gerry grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Northside High School in 1954. She went on to earn a B.S. in Biology from Texas Christian University in 1958. While attending Rosen Heights Baptist Church, she met James “Jim” Owen, the love of her life that the Lord had chosen for her. They were blessed with 64 years of marriage, raising a family grounded in faith, love, and service.
She began her career as a laboratory technician at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, but her greatest joy came from her roles as a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished Nana. Gerry was a talented seamstress and a fabulous cook, known for her servant’s heart and joyful spirit. For over 55 years, she and Jim were active members of Shady Oaks Baptist Church in Hurst, where they both sang in the choir and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years.
Gerry shared a special sisterhood with a group of lifelong friends she had known since junior high—godly women who continued to meet twice a year to celebrate friendship, faith, and the blessings of life. Her cheerful laughter and handmade gifts were a testament to the joy and generosity of her spirit.
Gerry is lovingly remembered by her children, Julie Gilliland (Thomas), Jim Owen II (April), and Jennifer Basso (Steve); grandchildren, Meagan Clay (Jacob), Molly Gilliland, Luke and Daniel Owen, Bryce Basso (Gabrielle), and Mikala Basso; and great-grandchildren, Camden and Carter Clay. Gerry also had many cousins, nieces, and nephews that she treasured dearly, as well as neighbors and friends that she considered family as well.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, and her brother Dr. Joseph Sears.
The family thanks the dedicated staff and caregivers at Legend of Mansfield Assisted Living, AlēvCare Hospice, and Joan and Spiwe of Grace HealthKare, who lovingly ministered to Gerry during her final days. Her legacy of faith, love, and service will live on through her family and all who were blessed to know her.
