Fred E. Held, age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Born on June 19, 1935, in Dallas, Texas, Fred was the son of Fred Held, Jr. and Audra M. Held. He graduated from North Dallas High School and went on to live a life defined by service, leadership, family, and community involvement.
Fred proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957 aboard the USS Falgout (DER-324), and continued his military commitment through service in the United States Naval Reserve from 1957 to 1961.
Professionally, Fred enjoyed a distinguished career with Elliott’s Hardware in Dallas, where he worked for 31 years and served as President prior to his retirement in 1992. His dedication to community service was equally notable. A longtime member of the Keller Lions Club after joining in May 1980, Fred served as Club President from 1996 to 1997 and was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow for his outstanding service. Prior to moving to Westlake, he was also an active member of the Park Cities Lions Club.
Fred played a significant role in shaping the community he loved. He served the Town of Westlake as an Alderman and Mayor Pro Tem and was one of the original founders of Westlake Academy, helping establish an educational legacy that continues to benefit future generations.
On June 27, 1959, Fred married the love of his life, Ruby S. Held. Together they shared nearly 67 years of marriage, building a family centered on love, faith, and devotion.
Fred had many passions throughout his life. He was an avid golfer, a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, and a classic car enthusiast. His love of antique automobiles led him to compete in The Great American Race, a nationally and internationally recognized antique car rally, in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2000.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Ruby S. Held; son, Fred L. Held and wife Lina; daughters, Joni L. Rios and husband Craig Stanton, and Ronda Wells; grandchildren, Demi Held, Fred C. Held, Lyndsey Hill and husband Corey, and Elinia Eads and husband Eric Marsh; and great-grandchildren, Abigail Hill, Haley Hill, Logan Hill, Rose Rios, Norryn Eads, and Jari Eads.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Fred’s devoted caregivers, Jessica and Patience, for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided. Their dedication brought comfort not only to Fred, but also to his family, and their care will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Held, Jr. and Audra M. Held.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating Fred’s life will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Restland Memorial Park.
Fred will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to his family, his service to his country and community, his leadership, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched and the family he cherished.
