Ernest J. Anderson, Jr. age 89, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, in Grapevine, Texas. Born on August 22, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, Ernest lived a remarkable life defined by his deep devotion to his family, an extraordinary career, and an enduring connection to the natural world.

Ernest’s early years were shaped by his upbringing in a large Irish Catholic household in Boston, where the warmth of family and his Nana Gallagher’s aromatic kitchen left a lasting impression. During this time, he lived on various Naval bases across the United States and Panama, where his father served as a Naval aviator during World War II. These experiences broadened his worldview and instilled in him a deep sense of adventure and curiosity that would guide him throughout his life.

A Presidential Appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy marked the beginning of Ernest’s distinguished career in aviation. After two years at the Academy, he joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in Pensacola, Florida—a decision he often described as one of the most auspicious moments of his life. Ernest served honorably as a Naval officer and aviator, including service in three active-duty squadrons and contributing to intelligence efforts with the Defense Intelligence Agency. Later, as a reservist, he rose to the rank of Captain and received the Navy Commendation Medal for his work reviewing Caribbean port facilities.

Following his active-duty service, Ernest embarked on a 30-year career with American Airlines, where he became an internationalcaptain. Over his decades of flying, he took great pride in neverhaving scratched an airplane—a testament to his skill and dedication. Even after leaving the cockpit, Ernest maintained strong connections with his former colleagues, shipmates, and classmates, valuing lifelong friendships and regularly attending reunions and conventions.

Ernest’s life was enriched by his unwavering commitment to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Kathleen Anderson; his children Amy Palmo (Matthew), Meghan Nathanson (Joshua), and Michael Anderson; and his cherished grandchildren Jonah Nathanson, Adrian Nathanson, Victor Palmo, and Devin Biondich. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Regis Korba (Laurel), son-in-law Neil Biondich, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity of spirit. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Margaret Anderson; his siblings Robert Anderson and Peggy Kinna; his in-laws Elmer and Stella Korba; sister-in-law Eileen Korba; and many beloved pets, including his recently departed Labrador Retriever, Jam.

Ernest was a loyal and devoted husband to the very end of his life and often referred to his wife Kathleen as "his one true love." Their early years together were filled with adventure—from their romantic beginnings as young airline professionals, first meeting at LaGuardia Airport to purchasing a 200-acre farm in Western New York where they raised their family before being transferred to the DFW area. Together, they created a home that fostered intellectual curiosity, hard work, creativity, and a close and ever-present attention to and love for the natural world.

In retirement, Ernest found enormous satisfaction working on “TheFarm” which he so lovingly expanded and improved upon with his never-ending projects and collaborations. He created a welcoming place that the entire family cherishes and returns to every summer. His love for nature extended to every aspect of his life and he possessed a remarkable understanding of the history and mechanics of everything. Anyone who spoke to him for more than a few moments came away enriched by his brilliant and dynamic mind. He had a rare ability to articulate the way history, science, mechanics, and beauty have intersected throughout the ages and was generous with his insights, always seeking to better the people and the circumstances surroundinghim. He was a quiet and thoughtful leader.

A voracious reader, he carried books with him everywhere—even to his children’s weddings. He delighted in learning about others’ lives and dreams, offering encouragement and advice to everyone he met.His optimism, integrity, and imaginative spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

In addition to his professional achievements and personal passions, Ernest was a devoted Catholic whose faith was a touchstone throughout his life. He found solace and strength in his beliefs, which were reflected in his actions and relationships.

Ernest’s legacy is one of immense love, resilience, and an unwavering optimism for what life can offer. His family will forever cherish the memories of his wisdom, humor, boundless generosity, and his familiar request for a “head bump” as a simple gesture of connection. They find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on—in the colors of autumn trees, the blossoms of spring, and the glow of every full moon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on April 17th 2026 at 11:00 AM at:

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

861 Wildwood Lane

Grapevine, TX

The Mass will be followed by an opportunity for the family to share words of remembrance within the sanctuary, as well as a receptionwith food and beverages in the St. Francis Community Hall.
