Edward Mailen

November 29, 1941 — January 23, 2026

Edward Mailen was born on November 29, 1941, in Clay Center, Kansas, to Otis Perry Mailen and Mary Frances (Smith) Mailen. He was the only son of five children, growing up alongside his two older sisters, Shirley Kimball and Charlotte Vasseur, and his two younger sisters, Mary Patterson and Janice Mailen. Ed graduated from Clay Center High School in 1959.

Shortly after graduation, Ed moved to Topeka, Kansas, where he met the love of his life, Rita Kay Dekat. They were married on August 8, 1964, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. They were soulmates, sharing a love that shaped their lives, their family, and everyone who knew them.

From 1966-1972, Ed proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was fortunate to be stationed in Germany. After completing his military service, Ed earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Washburn University. He went on to dedicate more than 20 years of service to the Kansas Insurance Department, where he eventually retired.

Ed and Rita made their home in Topeka for most of their lives before later moving to Fort Worth, Texas, to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. Ed found joy in hunting, playing softball, enjoying a good card game, and spending time with family and friends. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and a devoted member of his parish, where his Catholic faith guided his life and relationships.

Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his sister Mary Patterson of Denver, Colorado; daughter Cheryl Estes and her husband Jeff and their children Jace, Jaelyn, and Jayden Estes; daughter Dana Landavazo and her husband James and their children Nolan and Elaina Landavazo. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Shirley Kimball, Charlotte Vasseur and Janice Mailen. He is now reunited with his beloved wife Rita where their love continues beyond this life.
