Pastor Bryan Floyd Lakey, a faithful pastor with a ministry that spanned decades, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 6, 1947, in Beaumont, Texas, to his parents Thomas Floyd and Annie Laura Lakey. Bryan's life was marked by serving his Lord, loving his family, ministering to others, and touching the lives of countless individuals along the way.
After attending Lamar University, Bryan spent 17 years with Mobil Oil, traveling across the United States and overseas with his family. At 40 years old, Bryan left Mobil to pursue full-time ministry, asking God if He might give him twice the time serving the Lord as he had spent in the corporate world. That prayer was answered and after earning a master’s degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Bryan spent the next 34 years faithfully serving in churches across Texas, Florida, Alabama, and Tennessee.
The Lord gave Bryan a tremendous heart for others, which led him to faithfully serve in numerous ministries. From prisons, (a ministry which led him into maximum security facilities three times a week for seven years), to nursing homes, to disaster relief, Bryan’s love for Christ was evident in his desire to meet peoples’ physical needs and see others reconciled to God. Bryan also served his community as a police chaplain. Alongside his beloved wife of 56 years, Nora Jean Lakey, whom he met at just 15 years old, Bryan founded a prayer ministry for police officers and first responders; a ministry which grew to over 1,500 officers.
Bryan's legacy extends beyond his faithful pastoral ministry, encompassing his love for his family and passion for music. His devotion to his family was unwavering, evident in his close bond with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. A talented musician, he sang and played multiple instruments, including guitar, mandolin, banjo, drums, harmonica, and tambourine.
Bryan is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Floyd and Annie Laura Lakey; and his baby sister, Francis Lakey.
Bryan is survived by his wife, Nora Jean Lakey; his daughter, Melanie Duell and husband Derrick; his son, Aaron Lakey and wife Bonnie; his grandchildren, Jacob, Ethan, Emma, Nora Kate, Katie, and Ruby; his great grandson, Everett Duell; his older sister, Patricia James, and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
