Barbara Mae Burke (Vieira), 80, of Coppell, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, at home, surrounded by the love of her family and the comfort of her devoted husband of 60 years.
Born on April 15, 1946, in Newport, Rhode Island, Barbara was the daughter of George Vieira, Jr. and Frances (Andrews) Vieira. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1965 and shortly thereafter married the love of her life, Victor H. Burke, on May 2, 1966. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, partnership, and enduring love. Together they built a life filled with cherished memories, raised three children, and created a legacy of faith, family, and love that will continue for generations.
As a military spouse, Barbara embraced the adventure of traveling and building a home wherever life took her family. During those years, she built a meaningful career as a Civil Service Administrative Assistant supporting the United States Air Force. Her kindness, professionalism, and dedication left a lasting impression on the military service members and commands she supported.
Barbara’s life was one of quiet strength, deep devotion, and unwavering love. While she held several roles throughout her life, her most important role was that of a nurturer. She lovingly cared for her home, supported her husband throughout his military career, and helped raise and care for many of her grandchildren. Family was the center of her world, and her greatest joy came from caring for those she loved.
Barbara found joy in life’s simple blessings. She was an exceptional cook who took great pride in preparing traditional Cape Verdean dishes for family and friends. Her kitchen was a place where love was expressed through food, laughter, and togetherness.
She had a passion for gardening and spent countless hours tending to her flowers and plants. One of her favorite pastimes was watching birds gather at her feeders. Barbara also loved shopping, traveling, music, jewelry, family photographs, and old home videos. She was an avid reader who never tired of learning and exploring new stories.
The beach held a special place in Barbara’s heart. She found peace walking along the shoreline, listening to the waves, and reflecting on life’s many blessings. Whether collecting treasures from her travels or simply enjoying the sound of the ocean, she felt most at home near the water.
A woman of deep faith, Barbara was a devoted member of St. Ann Catholic Parish in Coppell for many years. She quietly served her church community by ironing and folding church linens, finding joy in serving others behind the scenes.
Barbara loved decorating for every holiday and creating traditions that brought family together. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel loved, welcomed, and remembered.
She will be remembered most for her loving heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to others. Through friendships cultivated over many years, she remained connected with countless people, often reaching out with inspirational messages, words of encouragement, prayers, and expressions of love. Whether family, friend, neighbor, or acquaintance, Barbara never missed an opportunity to brighten someone’s day or let someone know they were in her thoughts. The overwhelming outpouring of love following her passing is a testament to the many lives she touched.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband, Victor H. Burke; her children, Vicki M. Nunez and husband Emerson Nunez, Felicia A. Brooks and husband Vincent Brooks, and Victor H. Burke Jr. and wife Sabrina Burke; her grandchildren, Nicole Bell, Jeffrey Bell, Jr., Jonathan Bell, Tim Miller and wife Adriana, Kristen Robinson and husband De’Vaun, Madison Miller, Tiffany Nunez and husband Pedro, Indigo Burke, Vyncent Burke, and Tysen Burke; her great-grandchildren, Jakiah, Alaya, Carson, Jayson, Zoey, Shannon, Dallas, Roman, De’Vaun Jr., Blake III, Cameron, and Alani; her sister, Joyce Haddocks; her brother, Richard Vieira; her sister, Lisa Reid; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, George Vieira, Jr. and Frances (Andrews) Vieira; her brother, George Vieira III; and her nephew, George Vieira IV.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Grapevine, Texas, followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at 12:00 p.m. at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
